Home Decor: Maleficent Dragon Trophy

Paper Mache Maleficent dragon trophy by Dan (the Monster Man) Reeder

In honor of the “Maleficent” movie premiere this past weekend, I wanted to share an amazing project by Dan “the Monster Man” Reeder: Maleficent Dragon Trophy. It was a custom commission project which he sold for $2000.

Dan used paper mache to recreate the head of the Maleficent dragon head, and mounted it like a wall trophy – clever idea and goregous reproduction! Impressive attention to detail with glass eyes and LED lights to make it extra ominous.

Home Decor Lessons Learned from Burning Man

Blogger (and Offbeat Empire publisher) extraordinaire Ariel Meadow Stallings wrote this post on the home decor lessons she’s learned from Burning Man – from using colored lights to creating down-tempo zones.

From her post:

See, part of the Burning Man experience is creating a little home for yourself out in the desert. You are given a blank slate (a flat, dusty, dry lake bed) and it’s up to you to create a semblance of Somethingness out of the Nothingness. People go ALL OUT, of course — constructing entire buildings furnished with carpets, couches, beds, curtains — the whole shebang. Then at the end of the week, they tear or burn it all down, and cart the mess away. Whatever you may think of Burning Man, the way it creates a There out of Nowhere is truly remarkable… and there are lessons to be gleaned.

Progress on a Homemade Statue

ValkyrieII recently posted a statue he/she updated (sorry, based on the information and comments available, I don’t know if ValkyrieII is male or female). Anyway, on the left is the original version of the statue, either made for a college class or Halloween (doesn’t it look like an awesome headstone piece for a cemetery?). The right side shows the updates ValkyrieII has made to it.

The other pictures that accompany the post really show some nice detail work. Tt’s originally made out of chicken wire, paper maché, hardened fabric, and Styrofoam pieces. It has a Styrofoam head from Michael’s before, but the facial features weren’t great so this year, ValkyrieII bought some clay and built up some parts to make the face look a little more human.

The base is a microwave box with some 99¢ store decorations and paint on it. ValkyrieII said s/he tried to make it as weather proof as possible, but with the weight of the statue and the morning dew, the top has started to sag. Eventually, angel wings will be added to the statue’s body.

Now that nicer weather is more predictably ensconced, you might be in spring cleaning mode. Or maybe you’re past that, into “this place needs some sprucing up” mode. How about a nice new door wreath…with a touch of geek? Scruffy over at Set to Stunning has just the project tutorial for you – a Hobbit door wreath!

I like that she “added oomf” to her acorns with glitter and Mod Podge, and that this wreath was originally intended as holiday decor, but now is a year-round essential.

I also love that by creating the wreath, you’ll “be the envy of those you don’t know half as well as you would like, and those you like half as well as they deserve.”

One of many geektastic tutorials on their site, the Stepping Stones how-t0 (ahem) steps you through the whole process from pro tips for mixing up the Quikrete, to the Gallifreyan translator app they used.

For their project, they of course chose to spell out, “Our” “Nerd” “Home” + “Geek,” but with a translator, you could make your stones spell out whatever you like. What would you spell with your stones? Share with us in a comment below!
