Paper Piecing in a Flash

FlashPaperPiecing

Designer Michelle Thompson has come up with another amazing paper piecing pattern for quilters, this one featuring everyone’s favorite speedster, the Flash. You can find the pattern on Fandom in Stitches, along with dozens more superhero and pop culture paper piecing patterns. I think what makes Michelle Thompson’s patterns so striking is her use of decorative stitching to enhance the details (take a look at all the line work–it’s all satin stitching done by machine!). This pattern is definitely not for the faint of heart, so if you’re new to paper piecing, I’d suggest looking for something with fewer pieces to start with.  You can find all sorts of ideas and even tutorials on Fandom in Stitches.  Go forth and conquer, quilters!

Amazingly Intricate Papercraft Microbes

microbe_10-620x929

Yes, that image above is PAPER. Artist Rogan Brown specializes in paper sculptures that explore (in his words) “patterns and motifs in the natural world.” And you must check out his portfolio, because the pieces are incredibly intricate, detailed, and breathtakingly beautiful.  You can see up-close, detailed photos of the above piece on Makezine.com (where I found the image above), but definitely check out his portfolio to get a sense of the breadth of this artist’s work too.  I can hardly believe it’s paper.  What do you think about the unusual medium and subject matter? Let us know in the comments!

Papercraft Minecraft Torch – Pin of the Week

minecraft torch papercraft

I really like the idea of this DIY Minecraft torch. It looks super easy to make, not too expensive, and it would look great to have them dotted around the place for a Minecraft themed party, or even just as part of your everyday décor! There are full instructions of how to make your own papercraft torch, as well as a template to print your own. Happy Mining! :)

Edited to add the original source of the pictures here and the design here.

Making science fun with paper roller coasters

Paper Roller Coaster by Andrew Gatt

My grade school days are so far behind me, I remember very little about any sort of science experiments. I vaguely recall something about adding food coloring to water to turn white carnations different colors. BOR-ING. If I had Andrew Gatt for a teacher, I think I would have some pretty epic science memories.

As the lower school science specialist as a school in Raleigh, North Carolina, Andrew started building paper roller coasters in the late 90s as an activity in his 5th grade classroom. He continued refining his designs over the years, and started making presentations of his designs at teacher conventions and eventually started selling the templates and directions.  These days, he teaches science to 7th and 8th graders and uses the templates with his 7th graders each fall. The templates are available on his website.

Homeschoolers and science aficionados rejoice! Andrew offers three lesson plans to use with the paper roller coasters, which are available for free download on his website, PaperRollerCoasters.com. “The lesson plans show how paper roller coasters can be used to teach about speed, acceleration, potential energy, and kinetic energy,” says Andrew. “It’s also a great structural engineering lesson in which students have to build a sturdy structure that will hold up the tracks.”

See videos of paper roller coasters in action on Andrew’s YouTube channel!

Up to the challenge of building your own coaster? We’d love to hear about your efforts and results – feel free to share a link to your creation in the comments below! Go forth now and SCIENCE!

A Papercraft Millenium Falcon That Will Blow Your Mind

MilleniumFalconPapercraft

It might look like computer graphics, but no.  This is made from paper–well, 99% of it.  The artist, Bernard Szukiel, says it took him 4 years to build this 38″ long model using photos he found on the internet, fiber optic lights, and LEDs.  For more AMAZING photos of this incredible model, you’ve got to check out his gallery!

Accio Freezer Paper! Harry Potter Craft

Harry Potter freezer paper stencil tshirt by Kacey Kendrick Wagner

I love surfing about the interwebs and happening upon geeky crafts. I feel an immediate kinship with the person – here’s someone who’s both crafty AND geeky, like me! And when – BONUS! – they include a step-by-step tutorial, I do a little happy dance. Kacey at Stay at Home Artist provided just such an example with her Harry Potter Freezer Paper Stencil t-shirt tutorial.

With her step-outs, even if you aren’t crazy-graphically-gifted like Kacey (that script text! that stag!), you can still pump out a cool t-shirt that pays homage to whatever fandom trips your trigger. What fandom would you choose and what would you stencil? Have you tried freezer paper stenciling? What were your results? So many questions!
