Watchmen Rorschach Cross-stitch
The detail is incredible in Craftster user Dark Seraphim‘s cross-stitch of Rorschach from Watchmen. I’m always impressed with large works of needlework.

If you read the amazing graphic novel by Alan Moore, in the past couple weeks, you probably have. You’ll receive no argument from me that The Watchmen was an incredible film, but as so often with beloved books-turned-movie there was a lot missing. Where is the pirate comic we all loved so much? And what about Hollis Mason and the excerpts from his book that gave us such a perspective on what it was like to be a masked crime fighter?.
Well, good news, folks. Warner Brothers is not letting us down. Today, on Blu-Ray, DVD, and On Demand you will find The Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter. In addition to the gut wrenching, often incredibly gory pirate tale that was the comic-inside-the-comic in The Watchmen novel, the disc will also feature Under the Hood, the back story on Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl.
Even if you haven’t read the graphic novel, if you loved The Watchmen as a stand alone film, I know you’ll want to have your hands on these two other short films. In the book, Tales of the Black Freighter serves as a vivid and sometimes sickening parallel to what is happening in the world The Watchmen inhabit, and Under the Hood serves as more than a back story on the character who only managed one little scene in the film, but a look inside the inner workings of a “masked-avenger”. Perhaps one of my favorite lines from The Watchmen graphic novel came from Hollis Mason’s book:
I’ve heard all the psychologists’ theories, and I’ve heard all the jokes and the rumors and the innuendo, but what it comes down to for me is that I dressed up like an owl and fought crime because it was fun and because it needed doing and because I goddam felt like it.
Okay. There it is. I’ve said it. I dressed up. As an owl. And fought crime. [sic] The Watchmen 1986, Alan Moore.
So there it is, I’ve said it. I’m going to buy The Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter. And you should too.
Just in time for tomorrow’s spooky big day, I found some fabulous pumpkin carving templates with a dash of geeky flair, and a side of Joss.
That’s right – Firefly-inspired jack-o-lanterns. Aw yeah.
From the PinkRaygun, I present for your geek-out pleasure – Halloween Pumpkin Carving Templates. There are 9 patterns for Firefly, one for each character, and 3 bonus patterns for characters from another short-lived TV series, Heroes.
PinkRaygun also offers a lovely archive of pumpkin carving patterns, including patterns for The Silence from Doctor Who, Rorsharch from the Watchmen, Star Trek: The Original Series (ST: TOS, for those in the know), and this fantastic Wonder Woman pattern.
What geeky jack-o-lanterns are you planning (or have you carved in the past)?
Happy Halloween, geek-crafters!

I’m a little behind on my movie watching. I finally rented Kick-Ass this past weekend, fully expecting a comedy-action popcorn flick. Imagine my surprise to find out Kick-Ass is (arguably) one of the darkest and most brutal superhero films since Watchmen.
Needless to say, I’ve fallen in love, and a trip to the comic book store is definitely in my near future. Meanwhile, I had to check out the related offerings on Etsy, and came across these little hand-painted Kick-Ass peg people by Mia, aka Giddy Girlie.
I love how they resemble those Fisher-Price Little People I used to play with as a kid. Except they’re…well, more kick-ass!
The Watchmen was only the second graphic novel I ever read, and the second one I ever loved. The character we all loved to hate was Edward Blake, The Comedian. Alexandra-The-Great made this adorable Edward Blake Amigurumi as a Christmas gift for her mother, who she skillfully corrupted into a fan of The Watchmen. (via craftster).
I find it my geekly duty to inform any Geek Crafts readers that haven’t already heard, about The Shadow Hare. The Shadow Hare is a real-life Watchman in Cincinnati, OH. Not much is known of the Shadow Hare, other than that the Cincinnati PD is a little confused as to how to deal with this masked avenger who is patrolling their streets. After reading the initial article on TMZ, I did a little research and found a couple other news stories featuring The Shadow Hare and, of course, his myspace page.
If you’re not in Cincinnati, don’t fret. A little more research, and I discovered that there is an allegience of masked avengers (The Allegiance of Super Heroes) patrolling the streets. There is a Mr. Extreme in San Diego, CA and Wall Creeper in Colorado, along with many others who stay organized through the web.
Now, they may have taken The Watchmen a little too seriously, or maybe they are really awesome dudes trying to fight crime…but it’s unusual, and very geeky. And since they make their own costumes, very crafty. I love it. Absolutely love it.
