Greetings from another shiny, new blogger!

I’m Tonya, a high school foreign language teacher who has a serious love for all things geeky! I spend my day working with teenagers so when I come home in the afternoon, my absolute favorite thing to do to relax is kick back with my crafts in front of the TV watching sci fi or fantasy movies. I have a wonderful, crazy smart, computer programmer husband and two children who are being raised in true geek fashion who can already quote Harry Potter movies and identify mythological creatures.

I started crafting at the age of five when my grandmother taught me to embroider. (She was a firm believer in Idle hands being the Devil’s work and I was always into mischief!) Now, I also crochet, sew, stencil and cook as well as dabble in other mediums.

My nickname is Trouble (and rightfully so!) because I’m a high energy, creative and spontaneous sort of person. My students always stay awake in my classroom because they have no idea what I will do next. Being quirky and unpredictable is sort of a thrill for me.

As for my geeky side, I’m a big fan of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Mythbusters, Lord of the Rings and old school 80s video games. I’ve only just recently started playing current video games as an adult. I LOVE Kirby’s Epic Yarn and all of the Mario games. I”m an avid reader and can read a series of books with great speed. I’ve read McAffrey, MZBradley, Tolkein, Rowling and T. Hatchett. I’m currently rereading the On a Pale Horse series by P. Anthony.

If you want to check out some of my creations, feel free to check my blog at http://thetroublewithcrafting.blogspot.com/ !

Senior Citizens Day! Every Saturday!

Well, maybe not with discounts but I’m definitely the Senior Citizen of this crew at 57!

I’m Mary, usually known online as Lady Dragonsinger. Currently, I reside in the eastern side of Oklahoma with my pastor husband, who I refer to on line as ‘Sir Dragon Preacher’, and our two dogs, Rowan (a german shepherd who thinks she’s a norfolk terrier) and Piper (a norfolk terrier who thinks she’s a german shepherd). Together, we share a geeky fondness for the medieval period, all things celtic, Renaissance Faires, reading and exploring various places including but not limited to museums, used bookshops and ops shops (aka thrift shops). Most of my time, I have my crochet in hand which is something that was taught to me by my grandmother when I was nine. Knitting is one of the crafts I’ve learned with some assistance with  from talented friends and have been doing that for about six years. Over the years, I have also worked with counted cross stitch, needlepoint and a few other crafts.

My first geeky fandom was the Dragonriders of Pern series by the late Anne McCaffrey. Dragons have always fascinated me and it only took seeing the word in the title of her book to result it in being checked out and read as fast as I could. From there, it was a neverending love of her work, with the Dragonriders always holding the top of the list. It’s no surprise, that eventually, I would start to read the Harry Potter series and never leave it. Thanks to that series, I have made some amazing friendships both online and off. I’ve also really come to know my geek crafting. The first true geek oriented item I ever made was the Molly Sweater from a pattern available here.

When not working or crafting, you can find me writing drabbles for The Petulant Poetess or character rp for Wizards Without Boundaries.

Hopefully, when we meet up each Saturday, I can share some of the wonderful geek crafting that led me to join in!

Marjee-reporting for duty

Zelda wants you to know I am writing this post instead of petting her.

Hello there! My name is Marjee and I’ll be your Monday blogger here at Geek Craft!  Here is what you might want to know about me…I am a former high school chemistry teacher who has spent some time designing video games for both PBS and National Geographic (educational ones, natch!)  These days I’m the technology specialist at a math and science magnet high school. I am also completing my doctorate degree in research and evaluation, which involves geeky topics such as epistemology and statistics.

In addition to my geek-for-profit, I pursue geeky-ness for pleasure as well. This includes activities such as the watching and obsessive re-watching of science/ speculative fiction (Star Trek, X-Files, BSG, Buffy, Dr. Who, etc.,). I also read and write comics, love vegetarian cooking, enjoy spoiling my two yappy little dogs, Bowser and Zelda and adventuring with my husband. My own craft passions include sewing, softies, and crochet. My proficiency level is nowhere near the make-your own pattern stage, so I’m eager to learn from all of you guys. You can see my jibber-jabber on twitter as well, @mchmiel

Comic Book Hair Bows

Comic Book Hair BowsI play a lot of video games, but in my youth I was hard into comic books.  My favorites were always Marvel comics, though Batman was cool too.  Lately I have been combining these two aspects of my life with Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds for the Xbox 360.  So it was with this inspiration that I went searching for my all time favorite comic book character, Deadpool, on Etsy.

It was on SherryKCreations shop page that I found these wonderful Hair Bows.  They aren’t exclusively Marvel Comics, but I can forgive that.

BAM! Go check out the Hair Bows!

YOWZA! Visit SherryKCreations on Etsy!

SOCKO! More Comic Book stuff on Geekcrafts!

Out of this World-British Library

sciencefictionThere are at least a million different things a geek can do in London, and in my effort to do them all, alas, I failed. One major highlight was the current free exhibition at The British Library (for us yanks, it is like The Library of Congress), Out Of This World: Science Fiction, But Not as You Know it.

First, I am a bibliophile, so this was like Disneyland for me, except at Disneyland you can take pictures and touch things. Each section of the exhibition had a specific theme ranging from the birth of Science Fiction (in the 1600s!), Utopian societies, distopian societies, graphic novels, robots (did you know that the first “robots” in literature were actually synthetically made human slaves, and not machines?), and more. Among these were impeccable, perfect first editions, that made me drool, with some of the most beautiful, and outright cool cover art you will ever see. One major highlight was an original telegram sent from George Orwell to his publisher, lamenting that 1984 would have been “better” if it had not “been written under the influence of TB”, where he goes on to call Satre a “big bag of wind”.

I could write for days on the books on display and how amazing it was to see hand written pages of first drafts, books hundreds of years old, amazing posters (see?), but what really struck me were the interactives they had set up, for all age ranges. You (or your kid) can use an interactive touch screen to draw your own alien, and then watch it join other hand drawn aliens dancing around on the wall behind, there was a sleepy robot that was motion activated that carried on conversation about his favorite science fiction robots, a computer where you could challenge AI to the Turin’s Test, and at least five other things I didn’t have time for.

All in all, this would be an amazing stop in London (runs until September 25), even (or maybe especially) if you have kids in tow.
