Steampunked Upcycling!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term Upcycyling, it’s when you take an item that is no longer of use like an old holey sweater or a broken wooden pallet and you craft it into something shiny and new. You can turn an old sweater into leg warmers or a cat bed. That broken pallet can be morphed into a raised planter box or even bookshelves.

Here is a Most Excellent upcycle that was found on Craftster. Mieljolie was looking for inspiration for a piece to donate to a silent auction at an upcoming Steampunk event. Look at her creation!

It’s hard to believe it but this hat is made up of strips cut from a remnant of polar fleece and the metal tabs that you find on cans of soda. The technique is called tabistry and you use the strips to weave the tabs together. She changed the color of the polar fleece to make the stripes. The beer goggles are made from 2 (now empty obviously!) beer cans, some leather bits and studs for decorative effects.

Ingenious I say!

The Golden Compass in Cuff Form

Love this cuff—it reminds me of The Golden Compass (Northern Lights in England, apparently), which, as far as I’m concerned, is one of the greatest books ever. Love the whole damn His Dark Materials series, in fact. I didn’t read them till college, but I was besotted. I read the next two volumes post-graduation, while commuting, and kept missing my bloody stop on the subway. And occasionally crying on the train while reading The Amber Spyglass. So brilliant. Have them on my shelf now; must reread.

Oh, right. So, yeah. I like this cuff because of that whole convoluted backstory.

For Little Geeks on the Go!

For those of us who are parents, we all deal with the same problem of how to keep our little geeklings occupied and/or quiet when needed. Yesterday while perusing Pinterest, I found the most amazing answer!

A Star Trek Quiet Book!  I am in AWE! Julie has created an amazing quiet book complete with a full set of the Next Gen characters in finger puppet form, transporter, a Vulcan salute and Geordie’s glasses.

Heck, I think I’d have to buy two of these books. One for my kids and one for ME!

Check out Julie’s etsy for even more of her geeky, creative genius!

Winter is Coming

With the season 2 premiere of Game of Thrones tonight, I felt the need to find some crafts inspired by this amazing series (both books and tv show). After searching Etsy, I was automatically drawn to the bracelet made by Luna Designs 101.

The House of Stark bracelet is a very simple and understated piece of jewelry that any Game Of Thrones fan would be happy to having in their collection. The small wolf charm on the end of a cord, is enough for the wearer to know what it means and feel like they’re keeping it a secret.

Ideal for the Cave

We all dream of our perfect geek cave. It would have the perfect gaming set up complete with comfy seating, great sound system and of course, tons of storage for our games, books, and other assorted fun bit. What better way to combine that storage with a nod to one of the most well known of early video games, Pac Man!

I found this awesome bookshelf over on Etsy. Go check out LightYourselfUp’s shop!

Let the Games Begin…

Let the Games Begin... And with the opening of the new Hunger Games movie, based on the book, of the same name, they have. I may be one of the few people left who have not read the books yet but I recognize the symbols from it after all the publicity surrounding it.

I also recognize hand crafting talent and these pieces definitely fall in that category. A stenciled shirt and polymer pins bearing the Mockingjay symbol hat people have come to know from this series. The work of Miss K, daughter of PJCrafty, her mother who is very talented as well, the pins and shirt are just a few of the fandom items she has created in the past couple of years.

I do believe, the odds will always be in her favor with this kind of crafty talent.
