Perfect Cupcakes for Halloween

cupcakes

Usiris23 posted a tutorial (and the cupcakes were made by Instructables user SemadarG ) over on Imgur on how to make these scrumptious zombie teeth cupcakes for Halloween. Believe it or not, everything on top of the cupcake is actually just fondant and food coloring.

The fresh blood finish is made by mixing red coloring gel with drops of vodka of lemon extract. The dried blood is a mix red with a drop of royal blue and drops of vodka/lemon extract. Using a brush, apply the “fresh blood” color mix around the torn skin tissue, and apply the “dried blood” color mix around the gums, especially where the gums meet the skin tissue.

Can you imagine biting into one of these, if it were a red velvet cupcake?

Make An Amazing Toothless Costume For Extremely Patient Dogs

Loki in Costume

Before we get started, I want to point out there is a dog wearing this Toothless costume.

Don’t believe me? Check this out.

Loki in Costume 2

Say hello to Loki, quite possibly the world’s happiest dressed dog. Loki is the model of a dog’s Toothless costume from “How to Train Your Dragon.” The directions walk through the entire process, and even includes how to make a dummy body of your dog, if you happen to have a dog chill enough to sit still for duct tape and plastic. My dog, not so much, but for those of us with less than patient dogs, there’s also directions on how to take measurements instead.

Rogue Siren is the creator of the costume and she’s also got an Instructable on how to create your own mermaid tail (she performs as a mermaid for parties in the Atlanta area).

Outwit Winter with 8-bit Spring

Today as I gazed out my living room window at the nice April spring afternoon SNOWSTORM in my front yard and resigned myself to an entire lifetime of winter weather, I found my thoughts wandering (trudging) to…Steve from Minecraft.  Steve from Minecraft has all kinds of warm weather biomes to choose from.  Steve from Minecraft can play in the snow, sure; but when he’s bored (or his feet start to go numb in his diamond boots (are diamond boots even warm?)) he can go to a desert, or a forest, or even a jungle.  Steve from Minecraft can be standing in a snowy blizzard one second, and then take a step into a swamp biome and immediately find himself delicately wrapped in warm, balmy, humid rain.  Not to mention Steve from Minecraft’s freshly-planted daisies that he got for his Easter party four days ago don’t take one look at the incoming north winds and promptly die in their planter. (At least, not in the XBox 360 version.)  So why should Steve from Minecraft get everything?!?!

Good news!  Instructables poster lirpaeel has shown us how to bring some of Steve’s coveted greenery to our very own biomes!

The best news?  You don’t even need to build an ax to knock it down!  (Or a sword, like the kid in the picture.)

Happy Spring!

How About A Free Darth Vader Cross Stitch Pattern?

DarthVAderCrossStitch

I love finding free pattern downloads, and this one is especially cute with it’s little Darth Vader.  Username Avozika has this design as well as a few others (including a rather pithy Chuck Norris design) for download on her Instructables page.

Plushy DIY Roundup!

UniPug

This week on Spoonflower, the contest involves original designs for mythical creature plushies, and when I saw Gila’s UniPug design I knew I had to share it on Geek Crafts.  You can purchase your own DIY UniPug Plushy Pattern on a variety of fabrics (I recommend Spoonflower’s new Minky fabric for this one because it’s super soft and cuddly, like the ever elusive UniPug himself) in Cross The Lime’s Spoonflower shop.  The design fits on a fat quarter and costs about $17 with shipping.

GrumpyCat

If you’re more of a cat person, you might enjoy making your very own Grumpy Cat with this Instructable by username elewis03, complete with step-by-step instructions and pictures, as well as a rudimentary pattern you can download for free.  This little guy would make an excellent cubicle pal at the office, don’t you think?

FrogPrince

If grumpy kitties and mythical unipugs aren’t your thing, how about a Frog Prince named Ferdinand from Abby Glassenberg’s blog While She Snaps? This DIY has a free downloadable pattern along with excellent pictures and instructions.  While you’re there, you should check out the other free plushy patterns on Abby Glassenberg’s site–super cute!
