Make Your Own String Dolls!

StringDolls

I was hanging out with my best friend and her family, including two very rambunctious boys, and we were at a big toy store when my friend found this really fun looking kit for making string dolls.  But the kit was $20, and we both kinda cringed at the price and put the kit back on the shelf.

However, it got me thinking, somebody out on that world wide web has had to have posted a tutorial on how to make these super cute little guys! A quick Google search, and lo! It seems the most excellent Natalie over at Doodle Crafts has got this DIY covered!

Unlike a lot of tutorials I saw, she uses pipe cleaners and a wooden bead for the string dolls’ bodies.  Other tutorials used heavier gauge wire and bits of styrofoam (or nothing at all for the base of the head).  Natalie also uses regular old white glue to secure the string onto the base form, whereas other tutorials use super glue (or other heavier duty adhesives).  I haven’t tried making one yet, but I certainly plan to.  It seems to me it would be best to experiment with whatever materials you have on hand and see what works best for you when creating your new little string doll best friend!  I would guess that different materials would have different staying powers and durability.

Have you ever made one of these cute little guys? What materials did you use?! How did yours turn out!? Be sure to share in the comments below!

Geeky Easter Eggs

With Easter almost upon us, it’s time for creating eggs that show off your own natural geekiness!

For the steampunk fans out there, Jen from Epbot has once again created some beautiful metal-looking eggs with charms added as a great extra bit of cuteness. She used papercraft eggs as the base, and then modified metal tape to put over it.

Next, the wonderful crafters over at Our Nerd Home posted a quick and easy DIY to make your own Yoshi eggs! Using large plastic eggs from Michaels, they spray painted a layer of white, and then added large colored dots  to create eggs that Super Mario would be proud of.

Hopefully that will help you geek-ify your Easter basket this year, and here’s wishing everyone a very Happy Easter!

Creepily Accurate Bioshock ADAM Syringe

bioshock adam syringe

To tell the truth, I’ve never actually played BioShock. But I’ve seen screenshots and a bit of the game in action, and—even though I know I’m absurdly late to the party—I would still like to play it one of these days. I’ve also seen a helluva lot of cool BioShock costumes over the years, which only increases my interest. Any excuse to dress up! Especially if the accessories—like this homemade ADAM syringe—are this cool. Of course, I’d be a total poseur if I whipped out one of these any time soon—it’s obligatory that I play the game first! But I encourage any and all BioShiock fans to get crafty pronto.

Mini Papercraft, Maxi Cool

Have you ever wanted to make an adorable mini papercraft version of…anything cool? Ever? Well, Gus Santome probably has you covered. She-Ra? Check! Batman? Yep! R2-D2? Indubitably!

Seriously, these are crazy cute. I haven’t tried to make any yet (partially because I already have too many knickknacks and gewgaws), but I could use a bit more flair on my desk at work…. Project!
