Nom nom – International Pi Day!

Nom nom - International Pi Day

Today is the 14th of March and that can only mean one thing. No, I don’t mean the birthday of Albert Einstein and Johann Strauss, I mean International Pi day! According to the Pi Day website:

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (a Greek letter) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

An Introduction

jennysortinghat Hi everyone, I’m Jenny, and I’m a new writer on geek crafts, so I thought I should introduce myself before I make my first ‘proper’ post! I will have a regular posting slot every Saturday morning!

(Photo credit to my sister, Kate, taken at the WB studio making of Harry Potter tour in London. Hey, Kate!)

I live in London, England (with my equally geeky boyfriend, Shaun) and as you may have guessed I am a massive geek and I love crafting! My favourite crafts are crochet, particularly amigurumi, and baking, but to be honest I like to dabble in a bit of everything, and I’m willing to try anything and everything once, but I have finally conceded that I am never going to be able to knit.

Geek wise, my greatest loves are Harry Potter and Studio Ghibli. I also love gaming (although I’m terrible at it, despite years of practice…!) my favourite games are currently Little Big Planet, Skylanders, Ni no Kuni, Alice Madness Returns and all the Lego games! Oh, and I can’t forget the old classics, Pokémon, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro!

I am also a massive science nerd. I have a degree in Genetics and am currently training to be a nurse in order to achieve my dream of becoming a Genetic Counsellor! I love all types of science, though, so there may be a fair few science-related geek crafts coming your way!

Of course, that’s not ALL of my geeky loves, but it gives you a taste of things to come…

Well, I think that is enough of an introduction. I hope you will enjoy my posts. Remember to check in every Saturday morning for my geeky crafty updates!!

The Stuffed Weeping Angel

215180_17Feb13_photo_2-2

Just in time for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary, the Weeping Angels have been crocheted, have been turned into Christmas tree toppers and even turned into costumes.  But now, Lanikins has taken the Weeping Angel from creator Steven Moffat to the next level….and it’s strangely cuddly.

Lanikins is a dollmaker by trade and owns the Etsy shop of the same name, as well as being a regular poster to Craftster. Typically, her posts on Craftster show off the pop culture poppets she’s made. Of her Weeping Angel, Lanikins said,

“”Blink’ is my favorite episode [of Doctor Who], so I decided that I needed to make a Weeping Angel poppet.  I thought, “Hey Lani, this should be a piece of cake!!!…I mean, it is just one color, right?!?!”  Oh, I was SO WRONG!!!!  I sat there, staring at the basic body pieces, and my mind started racing…how was I going to get those hands to stay on her face?  How was I going to pull of the wings?  And what about the hair?  I looked at her, and my thought was that when you look at a statue, their hair isn’t made from a different material, so for me, it had to be fabric.  I made several little worms, and after attaching them, I needle-sculpted it to make it look like hair…and stone.  After a lot of zoning out, some SERIOUSLY sore hands, and countless hours into this, here she is!!!”

For anyone interested in making their own Doctor Who character poppet, Good Cookie Creations has a free pattern available to use as your poppet base.

A Truly Super (Mario) Party

piranha plant Handmade piranha plants? Stompable balloon Goombas? A DIY chain chomp piñata? Homemade mushroom cupcakes? This has got to be the best Super Mario-themed birthday party ever! I hope this kid appreciated it—it was only his fourth birthday. I’d be pretty psyched if someone threw me a party that awesome now, and I’m 31.

Where the Wild Things Lunch

I’ve got a daily vegetarian burrito rotation going for lunches at work, but I’m looking to break out of the tortilla wrap.  This has lead me to explore the possibility of  packing bento boxes for lunch. I’ve found recipes for quick, vegetarian bentos for adults, as I want to be practical about it.  But it hasn’t stopped me from admiring the more elaborate, artistic bentos out there.

I submit, for your approval, this design by Anna the Red. Amazing. This is 100% edible and you can find the  recipe up on her website. This is only the tip of the rice cake.  She’s got tons of designs that will make your geeky heart giggle, and she provides heavily annotated images on her Flickr pages.  Take a look, but word of caution, you might not want to do so on an empty stomach.
