World of Geekcraft

Today is an exciting day at Geek Crafts! Our own Susan Beal, who blogs here every Wednesday, has a new book being released this week. The fittingly titled  World of Geekcraft is making its debut appearances for the Official Blog Tour both here at Geek Crafts and over at  Craft!

World of Geekcraft by Susan Beal

In addition to doing an incredible job with coordinating and designing this amazing book, Susan also was able to contribute several of her own projects. Of her contributions, my favorite is the Star Wars Terrariums. I believe when Susan told me she was making these I replied with a hearty, “Hell, yeah, I can’t wait to see those!” Here they are for you to see:

Our Renee contributed an awesome essay called The Resurgence of Atari and Nintendo.

Here’s an excerpt:

A big part of the renewed popularity of Atari and NES games lies within the breakthrough idea that it’s actually cool to be geeky. The word “geek” has transitioned from describing someone wearing a pocket protector to someone who is hip, in the know, and totally capable of keeping up with technology. With new video game consoles, cell phones, and computers coming out faster than most people can keep up with, being a geek has its advantages. As loads of average Joes jump on the geek-chic bandwagon, it seems the hardcore geeks feel the need to separate themselves; perhaps wearing an old Atari logo is a way of saying, “Yeah, I was here first.”

And I was lucky enough to contribute a fuse bead portrait of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Doing these portraits is a long process and I like to do them row by row. Here you can witness Buffy gradually showing her face:

Over 10,000 beads later, I had a complete portrait:

I know 10,000 beads seems like a lot of work – and it is! – but it’s totally worth it to see the finished product.

Krys and I headed out today and spotted World of Geekcraft in its natural habitat, Barnes & Noble:

If your local bookstore doesn’t have World of Geekcraft yet, you can buy it online at:

After poring through the whole book, I’ve decided my absolute favorite project is Garth Johnson’s Planet Commemorative Plates. I’m totally going to make these for my husband’s computer lab.

  1. Wow! I love it! I want it! OK… My favourite geeky thing… That’s a tough one. I love everything Mario, I must admit. I never walk out without my Nintendo DS… And I love everything Star Wars. But definitely my favourite geeky thing is your blog :^) (And a crochet Death star I am trying to design…)

Thanks and all the best from sunny Barcelona!

  2. What an awesome giveaway! Thank you! My favorite geeky thing…wearing my Star Wars apron and using my Vader spatula while making Star Trek cookies. (Gotta love both SW & ST!) So much fun!

  3. My favorite geeky thing….has to be coming home from work and crafting while watching buffy :) i have rediscovered the show, and thought i’d seen all the episodes back in the day, but i was mistaken! i’ve been enjoying watching it while slaving away at the sewing machine :)

(also, i love love LOVE the new blog layout :) )

  4. Ooo do I only get to pick one?? I love love love anything Dr. Who, but anything video game related comes in right along with the good doctor!

  5. My favorite geeky thing? Star Wars – walked down the aisle to the Imperial March, and our daughter’s middle name is Mara-Jade (her first name is a Sandman geek reference) After that? BioShock – there’s just something about Rapture.

  6. My favorite geeky thing would have to be Mario bros. I like them in the many forms they come. I also have a soft spot for certain sci fi topics.

  7. I’ve been wanting to check out the book since I heard about it.

My favorite geeky thing is my Deadpools hanging out with my My Little Ponies.

Or just geek crafting while watching BONES or The X-Files.

    =D

  8. My favourite geeky thing at the moment? Wearing an outfit inspired by a different comic book character each day :)

  9. Favorite geeky thing hmmm….Hard to narrow down.
Favorite geeky thing to make into a geek craft: Cthulhu
Favorite geeky thing to watch: Star Trek
Favorite geeky thing to play: D&D
I go keep going but I think that’s enough, heh.

  10. OMG! I wants the book!

Favorite geeky thing… so hard to chose! faves are Firefly, Star Wars, Big Bang Theory, anything Whedon, TV games, computer games, board games, comics, etc, etc, etc!
    Favorite geeky craft – amigurumi!
    :D

  11. I flipped through the book at Powell’s the other day – some really great projects. My favorite geeky thing? Wow… that’s a hard call to make. Craft related, I’d say it’s making eTextile projects; and media related is probably video games, though QI is a close second.

  12. Favourite geeky thing? My husband, he’s a computer programmer and very geeky! Other than that world of warcraft, mario and space!

  13. My favourite geeky thing is my tiny adipose from Doctor Who! I got him from a swap and he wears a tiny fez and bowtie!

  14. These days my favorite thing is anything and everything Doctor Who. Currently I am working on a metalic embroidered Dalek.

  15. My favourite geeky thing? How can I pick just one!

My current favourite geeky craft idea is to make a crocheted lace cafe curtain with stars and silhouettes of planets and spaceships on. There would have to be your standard rockets, at least one starship Enterprise (maybe one one Enterprise and a Deep Space 9!), and a Tardis. How exactly I would do this I’m not sure, but I’ll find a way :)

  16. I’m still a huge fan of pixelating quilts. Who doesn’t love the mushroom from Super Mario Bros? Seriously.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. Favorite geeky craft? All things classic Nintendo. Cupcakes, key chains, needlecraft- especially knit stuff. Oh- and mosaic tiles with sprites. Thanks for a chance to win your awesome book!

  18. TOO MANY THINGS TO COUNT!

Star Trek, Star Wars (traitor, maybe, but I can live with that), DOCTOR WHO (ZOMG STEVEN MOFFAT), Classic Nintendo, obsessed with Blackbeard (the pirate), Batman comics, Care Bears, The Muppets, knowing how/planning to survive a zombie apocalypse, arguing vampire lore like it was my job.

I also do crafts like a grandma. Like knitting a Cthulhu baby hat for my friend’s kid, complete with dangly tentacles.
    WIN.

  19. Star Wars, of course! My top geek love. There are many others, but Star Wars will always prevail :P. I hope I win, I can’t wait to see the book in one way or another.

  20. Tough call, but I would have to say my favorite geeky thing is Doctor Who. I’m currently knitting a TARDIS for the window seat in my kitchen.

  21. Ooh, so much to choose from, but anything gamer-related is right up my alley. Or Star Trek, the original series. Or Doctor Who. Or…

  22. My favorite geeky craft I’ve made is a reverse-appliqued Darth Vader t-shirt for my husband. My favorite geeky game to play is World of Warcraft. This book looks like so much fun!

  23. Being both a geek and a nerd, I can’t limit myself to one favorite geeky thing. But, if I had this book, it would soar to the top of the list! :) I love to make little geeky items for my friends…the most recent gift was a big, sequined, hanging ball-ornament with Edward Cullen’s face scattered a few times throughout. The Cullen ball continues to be of great entertainment for those who share her office.

  24. I think my very favorite geeky thing is anything Doctor Who related. If it’s blue, boxy, or is insisting I be exterminated post-haste, I’m all over it. :) Great book!

  25. Coming up with names for characters in Wizardry II: The Legacy of Llylgamyn on my NES Emulator complete with USB interface retro NES Classic Controller.

  26. if any of you all are MAKING something geeky/crafty right now, remember, if it’s awesome, we want to see it.

Take some photos, get them online and click the “submit a geekcraft” tab at the top of the page to let us know about it. Then I can write you a lovely witty blog post which will tell everyone out there how amazing you are !! (WINNING)

  27. My favorite geeky thing is most definitely Lord of the Rings, but the book, not the films, not the games, and not the fanfiction. I am an English major working toward my M.A., and so I study the book from a literary angle, seeing how the master philologist utilized many different languages to craft meaning in his stories. How geeky, huh?

But I also love lots of other geeky things like Supernatural (including going to conventions to meet the ‘guys!), Harry Potter, and geeky crafts with knitting, embroidery and even jewelry techniques :)

  28. I’ve cross stiched various Earthbound characters. My favorites are Flying Man, Mr. Saturn, and Tessie. Starman Jr is pretty awesome as well.

  29. LOVE Star Trek – I’ve been a fan most of my life. And I love those monsties – I’ll be crocheting one or two of those!

  30. @Paula – i love the idea of a crochet death star! any chance to get your pattern when you are finished designing it?

  31. My favorite geeky things are math related- the Fibonacci sequence and Pi Day! I teach and celebrate both in my 6th grade classroom. For crafty goodness related to these things, we make golden spiral art for the Fib sequence and take photos of the Fib in nature. For Pi Day, we make Pi art- assigning a color to each digit and then creating pixel art, key chains, necklaces, suncatchers, etc.
