I have many fond memories of playing Final Fantasy on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, and of never actually finishing the game. I eventually did finish the game, when I was in my early twenties, but I can remember always reaching the point where I would get my Airship and then be devastated by the opportunities before me. There was so much I could do, and so I did nothing.

I have an older brother, so I watched games being played more than I played them myself. In FF1, he named his black mage after himself, and the white mage after our cat. I remember him dying, and I got super upset. I was like, “How could you let yourself and Tig die?!” I have always felt extreme guilt when my party dies in an RPG as a result of this.
