Your House Would Be EPIC With This In The Yard!

Halloween Yard Decoration DIY

I thought this was freaking awesome last year, but a Giant Tentacle Monster absolutely tops the Epic Halloween Decorations charts.  In this Instructable by username flaming_pele, you’ll see step by step how to make your own Giant Tentacle Monster.  There’s a supply list and several pictures, though you will need some of your own ingenuity and creativity to make it work for your own yard.  However, the core idea is solid, and the result is TERROR-fic! (I couldn’t help myself.) What are your DIY Halloween decorating plans this year?

In Honor of Gene Wilder

il_570xN.1032240642_8z6q

Pick your favorite Gene Wilder movie. For me, it has always been a tie between “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles.”

In honor of a greatly talented man, I present to you a one of a kind painting from “Young Frankenstein,” by Nate Micheals Art of Louisville, KY. This hand painted piece is of watercolors and ink on 140lb coldpress paper, and measures 11″ x 17.” It’s also signed by the artist.

And, by the way, one of my favorite “Blazing Saddles” quotes:

Jim: Look at my hand. [raises hand and holds it level]

Bart: Steady as a rock.

Jim: [raises his other hand, which is violently trembling] Yeah, but I shoot with this one.

Fairy Garden in a Broken Pot

UCNudZX

Today’s “Geek Craft” might not be the usual conventional type of craft. However, it is pretty resourceful. A Fairy Garden is a miniature garden complete with structures and actual living plants. It is designed to give your green thumb a place to tend year-round and to lure fairies and with them, good luck, to your home. It’s a tiny space created and tended with love.

SweetCheesus posted this piece on Imgur last June. It’s a one year anniversary gift to his girlfriend, another Imgur user named slantedlight12. It’s sitting in an 18″ clay pot that he found at a local flower shop, and bought all the pieces and parts for under $50, and built it in about four hours. Half of that time was spent just breaking up the large pot.

It’s a nice bit of gardening and upcycling, as well as being pretty creative. SweetCheesus lives in North Carolina, so he’s got hot and humid weather most of the spring/summer. The plants came from a farmer’s market but he didn’t get the names of them.

Is it Too Early To Start Decorating For Halloween?

ghostlights_title

It’s probably too early to break out the Halloween decorations (it’s August when I’m writing this), but I honestly LOVE Halloween, and I CAN’T WAIT.  So, I thought I’d share this cool Ping Pong Ball Ghost Light Tutorial from Meredith at unOriginalMom.com.  It’s a bit of a riff on the traditional cheesecloth ghost decoration (I made these every year growing up as a kid).  Meredith uses ModPodge instead of Fabric Stiffiner, but I imagine either would work for this project.  You’ll find step-by-step instructions with great photographs on her website.  It may be too early to start decorating for Halloween, but it can’t be too early to start making the decorations, can it?!

Fashionable and Functional! A Supernatural DIY Skirt.

DevilsTrapSkirt

It may look like a simple and graphic geometric design, but there’s something really cool about this skirt: It’s actually a Devil’s Trap from the show Supernatural.

DevilsTrapSkirt02

What’s even cooler than this skirt? How about making your own? Blogger, Kat, from If Lies Were Cats You’d Be a Litter, has got a great step-by-step tutorial for making your own Devil’s Trap skirt.  The pictures are a little blurry, and the measurements are all in centimeters. However, the instructions are detailed and easy to follow.  Kat uses ribbon to decorate her skirt, but narrow, white bias tape might work just as well. If you’ve got a little sewing know-how already, then this project is perfect for you.  Besides, you never know when you might need to whip off your skirt and catch yourself a demon.  Woah.
