This High Schooler Turned Her Prom Dress Into a Work of Art

For this post, I’d like to suggest that the site be temporarily renamed, “Geek Arts,” because this girl went green with her art and prom, and has way surpassed any of us!

18-year-old Julia Reidhead, from Mesa, Arizona, knew that she wanted something special to wear to prom. She decided she would design her own dress. She and her mother purchased a used wedding dress for $40, and then Julia painted her own version of one of her favorite pieces of art — Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” — over the fabric, creating a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind dress.

She sketched a design on the dress in pencil, then tested her acrylic paints on an extra swatch of fabric to make sure they would work. The overall process of painting the dress took more than 40 hours spread out over one week. She gradually worked her way up the dress, ending with the starry sky. Reidhead was still drying the gown with a blow-dryer five minutes before her date came to pick her up for the dance.

Leon’s Window

Knickertwist (I love that name!) posted a really lovely tribute on Craftster to Leon, The Professional, a movie that came out in 1994, starring Jean Reno and Natalie Portman.

It measures 5″ tall and is built upon a Graphic 45 matchbox. It slides open, and features a Madonna, bullet marked wall and two quarts of milk inside, all part of Leon’s apartment in the movie. For more pictures of his window, check out Knickertwist’s blog.

Geek Crafts Are Not Just For Adults

Flat Head Syndrome affects roughly 48% of babies and requires them to wear a helmet as treatment. The helmets are generally white and look like ordinary head fixing helmets (not that there’s anything wrong with that). But artist Paula Strawn isn’t going to let babies go around in some boring old helmet. She makes a living painting the helmets to be more than a medical apparatus, but a work of art.

Look how cute and happy this little guy looks with his “new” helmet! It looks like Anakin Skywalker’s pod race helmet. Check out the link above to see some of her other designs. Paula has a great eye for what would be really eye catching and cute for babies to wear.

Grumpy Cat Shrink Plastic Chandelier Earrings

Anyone who reads my posts here know that I love Tardar Sauce (aka Grumpy Cat). I Sew Cute, from Ohio, posted a great Craftster tutorial on how to make Grumpy Cat “Skrinky Dink” earrings, and the process is simple enough that the steps can be transferred to making any kind of characters into earrings (I’m thinking some Zachary Quinto Spock earrings might be cool to have!).

And despite working with the oven, this could be a good craft to do with your younger girls, by having them pick their subject and doing the cutting themselves.

Custom Made Cassette Tape Coffee Tables

cassette-table-1

These cassette “TAYBLES” are hand crafted with birch hardwood and a vinyl label that is sealed and protected with a clear epoxy coating. Stainless steel cup holders are included, along with “tape” insides, which house LED lights. The tape-run folds down to offer a practical storage space for remotes and magazines while amping up the nostalgic look of the cassette tape. The table stands on your choice of carbon steel pin legs or sled legs.

The table above retails for $1,699. TAYBLE is comprised of three young artist/entrepreneurs who set out to make a product that would not only be a functional piece of furniture, but also a nostalgic piece of art.

Now You Can Be A Wookie Too!

Erin from The Common Room, of Phoenix, AZ, has created the greatest seat belt cover I’ve ever seen! It’s based on Chewbacca’s ammo belt!

Attaching with velcro, this strap not only adds style but comfort! It can also be used on a messenger bag, guitar strap, back pack, or anything else you can think of with a strap!

It amazes me that it’s taken this long, since the first Star Wars movie, for someone to come up with an item like this one. Erin might very well be a genius! I just hope George Lucas doesn’t stop her from making these.
