To cutely go where no one has gone before

When you’ve more or less been in school in some capacity since 1980, as I have been, your final month of coursework — ever– is a really big deal. That is what April 2012 is for me, my final month of classes! Much of that graduate work has been done while working full time and trying to keep a few hobbies around for sanity. Once these classes are over, I’ve got so many pent-up hobby desires to unleash. On the top of that list: amigurumi! And I can’t think of a nicer bunch of characters I want to give yarn-birth to than the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. By the way, clearly the best Star Trek franchise. No two ways about it. Picard>>>>Kirk any day of the week.

So cute, yes? I can’t decide which of these are my favorite but I will admit that I’m glad Wesley Crusher isn’t one of them. I know, I know, Wil Wheaton is an amazing man but the boy genius thing is so played out and it was played out in 1989.

OK, you know what? It’s Data. Data’s lil yellow eyes are getting to me. He’s my favorite.

Is there a Doctor in the Tardis?

Yes, there is and not just one but eleven Doctors.

Pixelated Mushroom, who describes herself as a “Librarian based in Australia who likes to knit, crochet, juggle and firetwirl (but not all at once)”, has completed crochet patterns for mini versions of all eleven regenerations of Doctor Who as well the Tardis. She’s compiled them into a wonderful PDF Collection that you can download here.

Just one more… Hmm? What? … Yes, yes, I know it’s almost time for the Friday Roundup. Just wanted to finish this lev… I am not! No way I’m addicted to… What? Just pause it and do the round up? Okay, but I’m not addicted to it!

Sorry, guess I had lost tract of time but never fear, for the Friday Roundup is loaded with some amazing patterns to create some fabulous Angry Birds creations (and I am not addicted).

Emjay Bailey, otherwise known as Nerdigurumi has crochet patterns available for free for both the Angry Red Cardinal and the Green Pig.

Knitter can find patterns for the pair as well as the Angry Yellow Bird at Knitterbee‘s blog.

Crocheters do not dispair because Laura Chua offers us a free download for the Angry Yellow Bird.

Michele Villa offers a pattern for a crocheted Angry Birds Cozy which can be adapted to size.

Crafts by Starlight has a pattern for a crocheted Angry Bird Black Bird Hat. There are also links there for several other Angry Bird hats as well.

Lii Yan seems to have some sympathy for those frustrating Green Pigs and gives us a pattern for a hat.

Yodagurumi!

I have a confession to make.

I’m a geek. I love most all things sci-fi and fantasy. However, I’ve not understood why or how the whole kawaii movement began to infiltrate my geeky world. What’s with the big eyes and everything all of a sudden has to be teeny tiny? I just shook my head in confusion.

And then…I found yodagurumi!

GAH!!! I must have him! Now, the website is in Spanish which could be an obstacle for some, but I can tell you that she doesn’t admit to whether the patterns are her own creation or if she bought them somewhere. Regardless, I MUST HAVE! LOL

Creepetz has created quite a bit of Kawaii Creatures but if you keep scrolling, you will see the entire Neverland cast, Alice in Wonderland with the Mad Hatter and Cheshire cat, Spiderman, and Darth Vader as well. I read her Spiderman entry and it said that her Spidey is 25 cm (or approximately 9.5 inches). If so, that means that Yodagurumi is most likely about 4-5 inches in height. My aging eyes rebel at the very thought of working with a project that small!

Usually, the words used to describe H. P. Lovecraft’s creature Cthulhu end to be in the range of ‘hideous’, ‘terrifying’, ‘gargantuan’. Somehow one never things of cute or cuddly. But it appears that Rebekah Clarke-Noonan, known as passiontiger on LiveJournal, has found a way to turn him into a cute and cuddly crocheted figure. Yes, you can find the free pattern for Cthulhu here designed by Rebekah and not that difficult to make. This three dimensional amigurumi is crocheted in the round using a 3.00 mm hook and knitting worsted. You might just find yourself crocheting up a family of Great Old Ones with this pattern.
