Battle for Beauty Interactive Game Event!

battle-for-beautySometimes. the world just opens up for geeks. This is one of those times (or more accurately, Friday is one of those times) on Friday, June tenth, Battle for Beauty begins in Toronto, where real life players will use softballs to compete against online players everywhere.

I really feel like this is a time where I can use the word “epic” and not worry about summoning an LOLCat. Microsoft is hosting this mega-sized browser based party, to help “make the internet more beautiful”, players will do battle against such villains as “The Eternal Loadworm”. It is a geek’s dream, a LAN party on steriods!

READER SUBMISSION: Geeky Coffee Cozies

geeky-coffee-cozyCoffee is a really special thing. By special, I mean an absolutely necessary, absolutely delicious morning ritual that could never be done with out. Something so special, necessary, and delicious should also have the opportunity to look really cool on a regular basis, so when Tara from SewTara linked me to her Etsy shop full of Geeky Coffee Cozies, I immediately logged in to show them to you. Well, immediately after I finished my cup of coffee. That’s okay, though, Tara understands coffee induced procrastination.

In addition to the Geek Coffee Cozy, she is also selling this Procrastination Coffee Cozy. Being

procrastination-coffee-cozysomeone who is always putting things off “until I’ve finished my coffee”, I couldn’t resist showing this one as well. You can also flip it around so the “Do stuff” box is checked, but I figure, why lie?

Never  one to marginalize, and always one to appreciate some cool binary stuff, I couldn’t leave the tea drinkers out of this (I am, after all, British by marriage). So, don’t fret it coffee isn’t your thing. I admit, I will never understand how someone couldn’t love a nectar so sweet, but, at least Tara is looking out for the geeky tea drinkers with this awesome Binary Tea Cozy. That says, quite simply, “Tea”.

There are way more geeky-awesome hand sewn cup cozies in her Etsy shop, including Scrabble Tile inspired cozies, and even one with a little gnome. Who doesn’t love gnomes?

READER SUBMISSION: Doctor Strangelove and Doctor Who Embroidery

Doctor StrangeloveApparently we’re having a bit of an embroidery theme around Geek Crafts right now. That’s okay, in fact, it is better than okay when it means we get to see this Doctor Strangelove Embroidery that reader, Megan made to remind her boys, “we don’t stand on people; It’s not nice”. If being the mom to rambunctious boys and a lover of Doctor Stranglelove leads to this, then, heck, I am happy for her!

This fun quote from Doctor Strangelove (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb) isn’t the only geek-tastic embroidery she has on her blog, Embroidnerd, she also has one from MST3K,  a fabulous ode to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and, yes, a TARDIS. Because if  you want to pander to me, you should include a Doctor Who craft in your submission (yes, I am shameless).

Now, I know there is already a Doctor Who embroidery featured on the blog today, but I couldn’t ignore this TARDIS Embroidery! Megan used a felt applique for the TARDIS and put this on organza (doesn’t that sound luxurious? I am sure the TARDIS is happy with it). My favorite thing is the detail, notice it says “Police Box” at the top, and the little instructions on the door are there, as well! Bravo, Megan!

Paper Dolls by Breeyn McCarney and Christopher Lewis

LED-paper-dressI really love when something simple becomes something outrageous and astonishing–like Paper Dolls, the project by best friend pair Breeyn McCarney and Christopher Lewis. Breeyn took paper crafting to a wholly different building (forget a new level!) making these gorgeous, hand cut paper dresses. Then, because that wasn’t awesome enough, Chris rigged these babies up with LED lighting, and remote controls!

Now, all of that is pretty amazing, but stand by for the REALLY cool part. Tomorrow at 9pm EST, Bree and Chris will be on the web show Nat and Marie, showcasing these amazing dresses, and you (yes, YOU) can interact with the dresses from your browser or smart phone! High fashion, high tech, social networking…is there anything they can’t do?

So be sure to catch Paper Dolls on Nat and Marie tomorrow at 9pm EST, and watch Geek Crafts next week for the follow up interview with Breeyn and Chris! While you wait for the show, you absolutely MUST watch this video.

READER SUBMISSION: Dark Side Apron

star-wars-apronReader Shira e-mailed us to let us know about her amazing, crafty, friend, Laura and her blog Pretty Nerdy Things, and in that e-mail was a link to this particular blog entry, the perfect, homemade Dark Side Apron.

In my humble opinion, there is nothing better than a long running, well known, very geeky joke turned into an apron. It references “cookies” and you can bake cookies while wearing it, how cool is that? Allow me to answer that: it is very cool (but you should probably still wear oven mitts when handling your cookie sheets, a cool apron will not protect your hands from the heat of the oven).

Laura‘s blog has all manner of geekiness on it, including a nerd’s guide to dating and romance, R2D2 Cookies, and movie reviews!

READER SUBMISSION: Invincibility Star Earrings

Nintendo-earringsRossana from Roka Cola sent me a link to their shop, and it was like being a kid in a candy store! The Roka Cola Shop it definitely worth checking it out, it is a gold mine of geeky, sweet, and all around awesome polymer clay jewelry and figurines.
