Race from Fleece to Foot at Sock Summit

I wrote about Sock Summit coming to town last weekend, and there was a pretty amazing element this year: a live-action race to card and spin a batch of freshly shorn wool and knit socks from it!

From the article:

Three lambs huddle in a makeshift corral inside Portland’s Convention Center Sunday morning. In a few hours, Heel Flap, Gusset and Instep will submit to the first shearing of their lives, and the Sock Summit‘s Fleece to Foot competition will be under way. For Sunday’s competition, six teams – five  members each – will rush to card the freshly shorn fleece, spin it into thread, ply two strands together into yarn and knit the first pair of socks by 3:30 p.m.

Worldwide Mash-Up, an international team from Canada, California, Washington and Iowa, won with the most knitting completed, earning $300 for Doctors Without Borders! Very cool.

NERV Pendant

NERV PendantFor the uninitiated, NERV is a fictional organization from the Anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.  It was one of my favorite anime’s growing up, right alongside Ninja Scroll and Macross Plus.  Then an obsessed friend took all the fun out of it.

Still, when I saw this NERV pendant by LatentArcadia on Etsy, it brought back some good memories of a simpler time in my life.  When I could spend an entire day watching anime without the worry of bills, kids, and work.

Go check out this awesome pendant!

Youtube Video: Glass Blown Cat

I found this awesome video of some dude in Venice making a cat out of blown glass.  His talent is amazing and I wish I had some more details about him so I could direct you to more of his work, but this video was just too awesome not to share.  I am always amazed by people who have real talent in crafting something of lasting value, and I think you will agree that this is fantastic.

Tutorial Tuesday: Cucco (and more!!)

Here’s a reader submission/tutorial double header!

Gina from Kiwistitch.com is a cross stitch wizard… and to be fair I really shouldn’t be featuring her Cucco, I should be featuring her Ode to Spot cross stitch, and pattern. Her Chrono Trigger Sprites Cross stitch, and pattern. Or her insanely EPIC Bahamut Vs Alexander cross stitch and pattern, which weighs in at an impressive 30,000 stitches.

But no. I’m featuring the Cucco cross stitch and pattern… because it’s cute.

Hit us up on the submit a geekcraft link if you’ve got a tutorial or a craft you would like to see here!

Dr. Who Tardis Earrings

Dr. Who Tardis EarringsI love Doctor Who.  I have been watching since I was a wee little geek boy and the series has continued to entertain me as I have grown into a strapping geek man.

Julie Smith of BohemianCraftsody on Etsy makes all kinds of geeky jewelry, but these Tardis earrings are perfect in my opinion.  The problem is, I don’t have pierced ears.  So I need you to wear these in my place.  Just be sure to tell everyone that you are wearing them for Pauly.

Check out the earrings!
