Pattern: The Gates of Moria

Speak friend and enter. *Mellon, to be specific. The gates of Moria only show this entry way in moonlight and starlight.  Natalia  Moreva of Kulabra designs has designed these mittens that make me want to rethink my mitten ban (everything falls to the floor if I wear mittens). But these call to the Tolkien geek in me.

So why not buy a copy of the pattern, and get knitting, and have a new pair of mittens for when the last Hobbit movie comes out?

Geek Knitting: Geek-a-Long Blanket

Geek-a-long Blanket squares by Megan-Anne Llama

Greetings geekcrafters! Today I wanted to share with you an ongoing geek project  – Latte and Llama’s Geek-a-Long blanket.

They are releasing one geek-themed square knitting pattern each week, including references to Sherlock, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, the DC universe, and Avatar. They have also posted a FAQ for the project. The patterns are free, but they are encouraging donations to Child’s Play.

Like any good “a-long” project, it’s fun to interact with others who are working on the same project. It looks like this one has some good participation on Ravelry, with 500+ members in the group.

What fandoms or images would you include in a geeky afghan?

Carissa Knits has devised some really cute kid-sized mittens formed as our favorite minifig hook hands, perfect for grasping little Lego lightsabers and other handy gadgets.

Knit a Stuffed R2D2

As the designer theredlineknitter says its for the tiny Jedi in your life. You have to start them young, its the rules.  Small huggable and sure to be dragged on wild adventures. Knit in just a couple of pieces (body, arms), this guy is ready to roll. As the designer says:

This very huggable stuffed R2D2 is bound to become a favorite friend for any Star Wars fan. He’s big enough to be a sidekick, but small enough that he can be carried around by even the tiniest future Jedis.

Free Knitted Zombie Pattern!

Isn’t he just lovely? You can thank Fiona Goble for designing this handsome fellow, and Craft Foxes for posting the pattern (with permission of course). He’s actually just one of the zombies you can knit because there’s a whole book of them! Fancy having a Zombie Cop? Perhaps a movie classic like Frankenstein’s Monster or The Mummy? Pick up a copy of Knit Your Own Zombie by Fiona Goble and you can make them all!

My favourite part? The fact that the intestines “tuck neatly into their own specially made pouch.” Awesome.
