Sci-Fine Art, Humor and Time Machines with Rik Livingston

There aren’t a lot of nice things about living in the desert, at least not until Fall/Winter time, but one nice thing about living here is the amazing Crossroads Cafe and Tavern, where I was having breakfast when the painting to the left caught my eye. I took in the various pieces by the artist I would later discover was the one Rik Verlin Livingston, and I knew I had to track him down and introduce my Geek Crafters to his “Sci-Fine Art“.

We communicated in e-mails a few times before I met Rik at an artist reception held at the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, which featured more of his work, to include some really great comic books. He was friendly, funny, and seemed to handle the attention (and the controversy surrounding one of his pieces) very well. I was really excited to be able to ask a few questions about his craft, his feelings on censorship, and of course, time travel.

Kirby Plush Tutorial

If there is one thing we love more than awesome geeky crafts, it is tutorials for awesome geeky crafts! Serena submitted her adorable Kirby Plush Tutorial that was posted on her blog. A little felt, a little batting and a lot of cute, Serena makes it simple, easy to follow, and, most importantly, painfully cute.

Doctor Who Regenerations Peg People

dw=peg-people
Peg people, like bow ties, are cool.  Randomly Generated, maker of the Back To The Future Peg People we posted before, has made these incredibly cool Doctor Who Regenerations Peg People to represent each of The Doctor‘s eleven regenerations! From the original Doctor to fish custard, and all your favorites in between. She is currently selling the whole set, but promises to make individual Doctors and custom sets, too! I love these!

Geek Crafts at Maker Faire!

If you are in the Bay Area (or can get there this weekend), don’t miss the magnificent Maker Faire! There is way too much going on to try to list here, but check out their list of makers and weekend schedule for tons of details. Here are a couple of things I’m most excited about…

Friend of geekcrafts Bonnie Burton is teaching a rad craft demo: make a paper-bag puppet of Admiral Akbar from her new Star Wars Craft Book. I went to her Yoda doll demo at Maker Faire a couple of years ago and it was amazing!

Meanwhile, Particle Zoo will have her excellent subatomic particle plushies for sale in the Bazaar Bizarre section. Her motto: It has to be scientifically accurate, and it has to be cute. (Thanks Rachel!)

Sugar Skull Kitties

What started as a handmade birthday card representation of a cat named Nardis has evolved into an awesome plushie that will ensure Nardis will never be forgotten. I spent quite a bit of time at Geek Booteek, admiring the plushie creations, but these Sugar Skull Kitties were just too cool not to post! There is a promise they will be for sale soon, and I just might have to grab one!
