Felted and Formidable

Oh my lord. If I had an extra $1800 lying around, I would so pick up a gorgeous needle-felted Panserbjørne from beyond-talented felter Stevi T.. Look at the attention to detail— the armor is all detailed and steampunk, the face is beautifully expressive…what a lovely work of art.

Tutorial Tuesday: Avengers Bookmarks!

It’s SUMMER! which means 2 things, big movies in the cinema and little children off school!

Why not keep your boys and girls (nieces, cousins, little brothers?) occupied for a few hours making Crafts by Amanda’s super cute Avengers bookmarks out of lollipop sticks!

I like this craft specifically for the fact that (a) you have to eat a lot of popsicles first and (b) you get to read books after!

Tight tight tight!

Are you excited for the Breaking Bad premiere? Of course, by the time this post goes up, the first show of the season will be over, but it you can’t stay up quite that late (like me!) or have to record it, the excitement is still fresh on Monday!  At any rate,  Allison Hoffman can help you channel your love of chemistry-gone-bad into craft with this crochet pattern for Walt and Jessie, complete with tighty-whities (for Walt) and removable hazmat suites. Both gentleman have itty-bitty crocheted Erlenmeyer flasks and Walt even has a little wire pair of glasses, but no amigurumi breathing masks, unfortunately.  Because of the little wire parts, these guys are not suitable for children, but then again, as is pointed out in the Ravelery post, I’m hoping your kids are not watching this show!

Meet Spocktopus: A Highly Logical Octopus

Spocktopus

Often when I can’t fall asleep at night, my thoughts turn to crafts. I solve all sorts of crafty conundrums in that drowsy half-dozing state – the perfect glue to adhere something, the right binding for a sewing project, where I last saw my size “P” crochet hook…

Plagued with menopause-induced insomnia, Karen at SewMuch2Luv lay awake one night and thought of crafts, too. That’s how she came up with the idea to combine an octopus with Star Trek for a friend. The result: Spocktopus.

I love that he has the gold rickrack on his tentacles – nice detail.

What kind of crafty meanderings keep you awake at night? Or what project would you work on if you had insomnia?

Have You Hugged a Nightmare Lately?

Have You Hugged a Nightmare Lately? Why would you want to do that?  Well, how about when the nightmare is a huggable version of Jack Skellington from the Nightmare Before Christmas?  Jack is crocheted in not-so-living black and white acrylic yarn.  The free pattern is the creation of April Folts of April Draven Designs.  When completed, Jack measures about fifteen inches tall and is worked in single crochet throughout.

Geek Glass

Hm. Geek-themed stained glass seems to be much more common than I’d previously suspected (see previous GC posts here, here, here, here, and here). But I have to add the work of stained glass hobbyest-turned-artist Judy Mascolo to the pile. She began creating Nerd Glass at the urging of her son, a videogame designer, and will no doubt be swamped with commissions now that she’s been featured on Boing Boing. I love the adorable, perfect Peashooter from Plants vs. Zombies, but I think my personal favorite might be Bender. Or maybe the Planet Express ship. It’s hard to go wrong with Futurama-themed stained glass in my book.
