Geeky Winter Hat Patterns and DIYs

I don’t know about you, but it’s cold where I’m at. Cold, grey, dead . . . Can you tell I hate winter? To combat my own winter doldrums I love using fun and ridiculous winter hats. It’s hard not to laugh at a Yeti hat, no? (I bought this one at my local grocery store, but you can find one here.)

There are plenty of great patterns and DIYs for geeky winter hats on the intarwebz, so I’ve rounded up a few to help you with your own winter blues. The first is this great, free crochet pattern on Ravelry, by SnappyTots, for a Police Box earflap hat. This would be a fantastic gift for the Whovians in your life.

This hat would be perfect for my 2-year-old nephew. He loves the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as only a two-year-old can, with a deep and abiding wuv. As much as he loves Turtles, he hates wearing winter gear no matter how cold it gets outside. This hat, though, he might never take off. And you could probably find the fleece you need in the scrap/remnant bins at your local fabric store (or in your own stash). I’m a huge fan of Sharknado, and I absolutely fell in love with this Shark Attack Hat DIY on Instructables (also by PiePopper). It’s not technically Sharknado inspired, but it’s definitely shark-tastic.

Last, but not least, he is: Yoda! I don’t knit, but this hat pattern with giant Yoda ears makes me want to learn. The pattern is free on Craftsy, and it’s by Kaira Anne Designs. The pattern is sized for a child, but she’s got a link (http://aknitica.com/2010/10/01/how-to-knit-a-hat/ ) in her description to a tutorial on how to knit a basic hat, and the tutorial has some tips on sizing.

Thor voted sexiest man alive!

Last week People Magazine announced that the lovely Chris Hemsworth (photo Credit: Ben Watts), aka Thor, is this year’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Well, duh.

In honor of this prestigious award, I thought, for my first post as a contributor to Geek Crafts, I’d share some awesome Thor related tutorials.

Thor’s Hammer

Of course, you can’t talk Thor and not talk Mjolnir, his big . . . hammer. :) Here’s a great Instructable on building your own hammer.

If you’re looking for something a little less “cosplay” and a little more “toy“, try this tutorial from Doodlecraft . It’s a bit more kid friendly, and you might even have the materials needed already, since it uses things like a hot glue and an old pillowcase.

Thor Costume Fun

The folks at Cutesy Crafts have this delightful tutorial on making your own superhero masks, including the mighty god of thunder. Supposedly these awesome masks are meant just for kids, but really? I think these would make fabulous accessories for everyday wear.

This tutorial from Life Sprinkled with Glitter has to be my favorite. It’s a baby Thor costume DIY, and Colleen Wickersheim has got step-by-step instructions, with pictures, on creating the costume, helmet, and hammer. I’m thinking this would be perfect for my nephew’s first Halloween next year.

Over at Photobucket you can find this free printable to make your very own 3-D paper Thor created by Jim Bowen (username trogdoriangrey).

You may have seen this one featured on Geek Crafts before, but it’s so worth sharing again. Ravelry creator Jess Newstone has got the cutest little god of thunder amigurumi pattern ever and it’s free! She’s even got Thor’s adopted bad boy brother amigurumi pattern (free to0!).

Star Trek Craft Book

Boldly going where no craft book has gone before! Written by Geek Crafts very own Angie Pedersen, this is an awesome blend of Trek and craft. While primarily a project book it’s also filled with Trek trivia and photos, making it a perfect addition to any Trekkie’s – or Trekker’s – collection. Trekkers and makers, together at last!

The projects are inspired by every version of Star Trek, from TOS to comic books, with a variety of different craft techniques and skill levels. It was really hard to decide on the first project to try, but I finally decided on the adorable Kahn finger puppet. He was super easy to make, thanks to the close-up photos of each step of the project. The only thing I did differently was the material for his uber-sexy Kahn hair. I had to substitute novelty yarn for the marabou trim that was called for, only because my local craft store didn’t have it. Unfortunately, I think the effect is more “who stole my conditioner” than “from Hell’s heart I stabbeth thee”. I still think he’s awesome though!

Kawaii Yeti

Pocket Felt Super Hero Owls

What’s better than tiny felt owls? Superhero owls. What could be better than that? Batman and Robin as superhero owls. Etsy seller Tiny Felts has owls in a variety of colors and designs and welcomes custom orders. Perhaps you’d like to request, a clown owl of crime to face off our dynamic duo. She also has options for customizing your owls. Super-owl, Spider-owl, Green Lant-owl, this could be a lot of fun.

Q is for quilt

Claire Chambers is a craftser and blogster keeping track of a delightful effort on her blog Absolutely Small. She has been doing this thing that is so cute you guys…felt alphabet squares. If you go to her Flickr pages you can see the full effort of alphas, but I selected the one below for our fair post. This princess is the namesake of my beloved puppy girl, and the ruling alpha female of our house, despite her 13 lb stature. Much more geek where this came from though, especially J, R, T, W, X, Y, and of course… Z is for Zelda!
