Meet Spocktopus: A Highly Logical Octopus

Spocktopus

Often when I can’t fall asleep at night, my thoughts turn to crafts. I solve all sorts of crafty conundrums in that drowsy half-dozing state – the perfect glue to adhere something, the right binding for a sewing project, where I last saw my size “P” crochet hook…

Plagued with menopause-induced insomnia, Karen at SewMuch2Luv lay awake one night and thought of crafts, too. That’s how she came up with the idea to combine an octopus with Star Trek for a friend. The result: Spocktopus.

I love that he has the gold rickrack on his tentacles – nice detail.

What kind of crafty meanderings keep you awake at night? Or what project would you work on if you had insomnia?

Reader Submission: BIG Creeper Plush

Geekcrafts reader MelloReflections sent us her foot tall creeper plush. She says:

“I made this Creeper plushie for my friend’s birthday- we’re both big fans of the game Minecraft.

The plushie stands about a foot tall; I used a 1 pixel: 0.5 inch scale. I had fun figuring out how to construct him so that the head is fully rotatable. The feet are weighted with beans so that he can stand quite sturdily on his own.

The plush currently resides on my friend’s computer tower at work.”

Want to make your own Minecraft crafts but don’t know where to start? Mello points us towards this useful resource for printable Minecraft Papercrafts (how many times the word ‘craft’!?) which you can easily modify into sewing patterns with a little… errr… braincraft? haha.

Invincibility Star Amigurumi Plush Toy

Invincibility Star Amigurumi Plush ToyI am always impressed by anyone who can take some yarn and a crochet hook and turn it into something awesome.  In my mind it is cataloged as pure magic, right next to people who can take some flour and water and turn it into something edible.  My feeble attempts to learn this fibre alchemy have ended in disaster, and some half finished scarves.

Etsian Steph Cortes (NerdJerk) has succeeded where I have failed so many times, and has produced some delightful Amigurumi plush toys of some of my favorite video game characters.  I tossed and turned over whether to post the Goomba, the Invincibility Star, or the Bom-OmbIn the end I decided to feature the Bom-Omb because i like things that go all ‘splody.

So I posted the Bom-Omb and then Redd looked at it and was all “I already posted that Bom-Omb“.  Then I was all, “No you didn’t, I totally checked“.  Then she was all, “I’m pretty sure I did.”  Then I was all, “Nuh Uh!”  Anyway, it turns out she was right, but NerdJerk’s work is too fantastic to give up on, so I have worked some internet magic and now bring you the Invincibility Star!

Reader Submission: Dr Who Plush!

Geekcrafts reader Rebecca made this plushie Tenth Doctor for a friend who, like many of us, has more than a slight attraction to David Tennant’s Doctor. Rebecca writes:

“I made this Doctor Doll for my friend, who has a major crush on Ten [who doesn’t?!] Her husband tells me she sleeps with him [as in, the doll] in her clutches every night)  After posting the photos on facebook, some of her friends have since commissioned me to make them their own Tens, but nothing compares to the original)”

Its always nice to have your work appreciated Lauren, I love your little Ten. Especially his cheeky little smile and diddy sonic screwdriver! Do you want to see your work here? Let us know about it by using the submit a Geekcraft link.

Tutorial Tuesday! Teddy Bear Labcoat!

Another one from me, on the Geeky Sweetheart blog you can now find a  pattern and tutorial to make a super cute lab coat … for your teddy bear!

I was asked by a friend to make this, and was surprised to find that there didn’t seem to be any patterns or tutorials on the internet, BAD internet. Anyhow, since I had to draft the pattern myself I thought I’d share it with you all.

Come on Geekcrafters, lets do SCIENCE!

Reader Submission: Light Up Portal Sentry Turret Plush

We’ve seen a few Portal crafts here on Geekcrafts. Indeed, across the internet, portal crafts have become a bit of a meme in themselves.

But when Geekcrafts reader and Deviantartist MelloReflections sent us her light up sentry turret plush it really caught our eye… I mean, what could be more ‘geekcrafts’ than a plush, modelled on a game, with electronic bits!!

I love things that light up!

Have you made something that lights up? Hit us up by filling in the submit a geekcraft form.
